Dry, damaged hair with split ends is a common dilemma and most often the end result of harsh hairstyling practices. These practices include chemical processing, heat styling and even hair accessories applied too tightly. Excessive over-styling renders the hair brittle, leaving the ends severely damaged. One long-held belief is that split ends cannot be repaired, but rather, only prevented. Following the proper haircare regimen will help revitalize your hair's health, thus preventing the initial occurrence of split ends altogether.
Step 1
Visit your hairstylist for a trim. You may require a full haircut, depending on the severity of split ends and damage to your hair. If you're willing to forgo hair length in favor of healthier looking hair, trimming off your split ends can give your hair a fresh start. Regular trims every six to eight weeks is encouraged.
Step 2
Seal the ends of your hair to improve the appearance of split ends. Rub a hair serum between the palms of your hands, generously applying it to your ends. This enables the split ends to stick together, giving it the temporary appearance of no split ends.
Step 3
Refrain from combing and brushing your hair too vigorously as this leads to breakage and splitting. Brush your hair when it is dry. Use a soft-bristled brush, brushing in a downward motion from the top of your head to the tips of the your hair.
Step 4
Wash and condition your hair on a regular basis. Use a shampoo and conditioner designed for your specific hair type. When applying shampoo and conditioner, be sure to do so from the roots to the tips of your hair. Avoid shampoos with harsh, abrasive ingredients.
