Natural Keratin Treatment

Found naturally in hair, teeth nails and skin, keratin is a natural protein which provides strength and flexibility to hair. As natural keratin levels decrease with age, hair can become deficient of this vital protein. Frequently colored or over processed hair may also be in need of a keratin boost. Choosing hair products which contain keratin may help a little but the best benefits may be found through a natural keratin treatment at a salon.

How Natural Keratin Works

According to researchers at Centre Claudier, natural hair is comprised of 95 percent pure keratin. Long amino acid chains link together, creating the twisted structure of keratin. They explain that there are three acids -- cystine, methionine and cysteine -- which are carried from the bloodstream and delivered through the scalp where they wait to be synthesized into keratin. However, they note that zinc and Vitamin B6 must also be present in order for the keratin to be created. If you want to support your hair's natural keratin, be sure to include foods in your diet with these vitamins. Getting a natural keratin hair treatment will replenish your hair's natural keratin source.

Keratin Treatment Pros and Cons

Growing healthy and strong hair can become more attainable through the use of a natural keratin treatment. When applied to the hair its resilient properties are absorbed by the hair, improving its strength, elasticity, texture and shine.

The one drawback to getting a natural keratin treatment is its cost. Expect to pay between $300 and $400 per treatment when going to a salon.

The Process

Although methods may vary from salon to salon, the process is basically the same. After hair is shampooed, dried and sectioned, the stylist paints on the keratin solution from root to tip. Next the hair is dried thoroughly and may be followed up with a flat iron which smoothes the hair and seals in the natural keratin.

Maintenance

After the treatment, the stylist commonly instructs the client to refrain from washing the hair for 72 hours. You may also be instructed to leave your hair down during this period so that the keratin is not disturbed through the use of tight clips or ponytail holders. Your stylist may also instruct you to use a special shampoo and conditioner for a period of time after receiving the treatment in order to maintain the best results.

Precaution

According to the article, "Benefits of Keratin Hair Treatments," keratin treatments contain natural keratin protein fibers extracted from wool. However, according to the My Style Bell wesbite, some keratin hair treatments can contain as much as 2 percent formaldehyde. When looking for the most natural option, be sure to ask the salon if their formula is formaldehyde-free.
