Oral thrush is a yeast infection in the mouth. It is caused by a fungus called Candida albicans and affects the mucus membranes of both the mouth, usually on the inner cheeks, and the tongue. It creates lesions that are creamy white in color. The thrush can spread to the roof of the mouth, gums, tonsils and the back of the throat. The lesions can cause pain and will cause slight bleeding if they are scraped. For people who are healthy, oral thrush is usually a minor problem, but for people with weak immune system, oral thrush can be persistent and difficult to control.
Oral Hygiene
Teeth should be brushed twice per day as a minimum. Also, teeth should be flossed at least once per day. The toothbrush should be rinsed thoroughly and replaced often until the infection is gone. An electric toothbrush can help people with hand strength and dexterity problems. Mouthwashes and sprays should not be used because they alter the flora that is normally present in the mouth.
Rinses
The mouth can be rinsed with warm water. A half teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water should be used. The water should be swished throughout the mouth and then spit out. The rinse should not be swallowed. According to the National Library of Medicine, a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution can also be used to rinse out the mouth. This should be performed several times per day.
Yogurt
Yogurt contains yeast-killing bacteria called lactobacillus. The yogurt can be consumed or applied to the affected areas of the mouth, according to MedlinePlus.
Nursing Mothers
For mothers who are nursing, nursing pads will help prevent the spread of fungus infections to clothes. The pads should not have a plastic lining, which helps Candida to grow. Bras and nursing pads that are reusable should be washed with bleach in hot water.
