Acne, also called acne vulgaris, is a common skin condition in the United States. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, it can occur at any age, but teenagers and young adults are more prone to it. Fortunately, a number of foods contain vitamins and minerals that will help treat acne.
Oysters
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, oysters contain high amounts of the mineral zinc, which is effective in treating acne conditions. Zinc helps heal tissues and prevents acne scarring. It stops acne by regulating the activity of oil glands. Also, taking a form in zinc in combination with topical antibiotic erythromycin may also be helping in reducing the severity of acne.
Grains
Grains contain B vitamins, which are important for keeping your skin healthy and helping to treat acne. Vitamin B1, or thiamine, helps promote blood circulation in skin cells and promotes healthy skin overall, while acting as an antioxidant, and pantothenic acid, or vitamin B5, aids the body in dealing with stress, which may cause acne. Low amounts of the B vitamins niacinamide, pryidoxine and riboflavin in the body can result in acne formation.
Dark & Yellow Vegetables
According to the Mayo Clinic, vitamin A can be found in foods such as dark and yellow vegetables. Vitamin A is an essential vitamin when it comes to treating acne. Vitamin A is used in conjunction with carotenoids to help keep the protective tissue of the skin strong and firm. Vitamin A helps reduce the appearance of acne by reducing the production of the natural human oil called sebum.
