Depression is classified as feelings of sadness, hopeless and despair that last for a prolonged period of time. Everyone experiences periods of sadness and depressive moods, but for individuals with depression the feelings interfere with their activities of daily living. There are several signs of depression, and they may be experienced alone or simultaneously.
Sleep Disturbance
Changes in sleep pattern are common among those suffering from depression, and it can manifest in several ways. The individual may find in difficult to fall asleep, or have problems staying asleep. In contrast, some individuals may sleep excessively as a result of their depression and have difficulty staying awake.
Appetite Changes
Individuals with depression often complain of changes in their appetites as well. Depending on the individual, he may lose interest in eating, causing unintentional weight loss, or he may turn to food as a comfort and eat in excess, resulting in unwanted weight gain.
Fatigue
General feelings of fatigue and lethargy are another symptom reported by many individuals with depression. Those experiencing this symptom become less active and describe a persistent feeling of tiredness. They may also experience a lack of motivation to complete normal daily functions.
Physical Symptoms

Increased agitation is also reported by those with depression. They often find themselves easily upset by situations or circumstances that would not normally leave them in a state of agitation.
Lack of Concentration
Those with depression may find it difficult to focus and concentrate. As a result, performance at work or school may suffer.
Feelings of Sadness

Thoughts of Suicide
In severe cases of depression, the individual may have thoughts of suicide or self harm. Any thoughts of suicide should be considered an emergency and discussed with a medical professional immediately.
