Benefiber Directions

Adults need 20g to 35g of insoluble and soluble fiber each day, and children need 5g per day, according to the American Dietetic Association. Many diets do not meet these recommendations. Dietary supplements, such as Benefiber, provide individuals a natural fiber source that is taste-free and sugar-free and dissolves in drinks and soft foods without causing any change in consistency. Fiber supplements have a laxative effect and may also help treat conditions such as diverticular disease. Benefiber options include dissolvable powders, chewable tablets and easy-to-swallow caplets.

Step 1

Stir powder forms of Benefiber into a beverage or into soft foods. A typical adult dose for ages 12 and up is 2 tsp. per cup of liquid or food. Keep stirring the powder until completely dissolved. Repeat the dose three times a day. Children between the ages of 6 and 11 need only 1 tsp. three times daily. The dosage of Benefiber Plus Calcium powder is 1 tbsp. once daily for everyone over the age of 6. For premeasured packets, use one packet for each cup of fluid or serving of soft food. Avoid stirring the powder into a carbonated beverage.

Step 2

Chew Benefiber tablets to help increase dietary fiber. Adults chew three tablets up to three times each day---not to exceed nine tablets daily. Children over the age of 6 chew 1 1/2 tablets up to three times each day---not to exceed 4 1/2 tablets daily.

Step 3

Swallow three caplets up to three times each day with a beverage to help supplement fiber intake for adults. Do not exceed the recommended daily allowance of nine caplets.

Step 4

Consult a physician before taking Benefiber if pregnant, nursing or if undergoing treatment for high blood pressure. Individuals with heart disease or kidney disease or those on a potassium-restricted diet should not take Benefiber, according to Drugs.com.
