Ingredients in Imodium

Imodium is an over-the-counter anti-diarrheal that functions by restoring balance to the digestive system. Manufactured and distributed by McNeil-PPC, Inc., Imodium is available in both liquid, caplet and chewable tablet forms. Regardless of the type of Imodium used, there is only one active ingredient in its anti-diarrheal product line. There are also several inactive ingredients as well.

Loperamide

Loperamide is the only active ingredient in the anti-diarrheal Imodium products. It functions by slowing the rhythm of digestion, which allows the smaller intestines more time for the absorption of fluid and nutrients procured through eating, according to Drugs.com. Its use is specifically for the treatment of diarrhea, although physicians may prescribe it for other purposes. Imodium liquid contains 1 mg of Loperamide hydrochloride, while the caplets and chewable tablets contain 2 mg per single dose.

Inactive Ingredients in Liquid

Imodium anti-diarrheal contains several inactive ingredients including carboxymethycellulose sodium, D&C ywllow # 10, FD&C blue #1, glycerin, citric acid, propylene glycol, purified water, simethicone emulsion, sucralose, sodium benzoate, titanium dioxide and xanthan gum, according to the manufacturer. The coloring agents provide Imodium with its distinct light aqua tint, while the other items are buffers are fillers. One dose of liquid equates to 4 tsp.

Inactive Ingredients in Caplets

Imodium caplets are approximately 2 mg and contain a less extensive inactive ingredients list than its liquid counterpart. The caplets include lactose, talc, magnesium stearate and cornstarch as fillers, according to RX List. The coloring agents are FD&C yellow #6. Recommended dosing for adults is two capsule, not to exceed 8 capsules in a day.

Inactive Ingredients in Chewable Tablets

Imodium chewable tablets' inactive ingredients are slightly similar to the caplets; however, they contain compounds geared to a more palatable function. Confectioner's sugar, for example, is one of the inactive ingredients that provide sweetness to the medication. Additional compounds include acesulfame potassium, cellulose and cellulose acetate, polymethacrylate, aluminum lake, dextrose, magnesium stearate, sucralose, D&C yellow #10 and FD&C blue #1.
