Overview

Allergies occur because of sensitivity to certain substances, such as pollen, report doctors at the American Academy of Family Physicians. Also referred to as hay fever, pollen and grass allergies can be some of the most difficult to control. Patients suffer most in the spring from tree pollen and in the summer from grass and weed pollen. There are a number of steps you can take to avoid pollen allergy symptoms.

Step 1

Stay indoors when it is windy and dry outside to avoid the allergens that frequently fill the air, especially during April, May, June and July.

Step 2

Shower as soon as you come inside after being exposed to pollen. Wash your hair and skin thoroughly. Put on clean clothes to avoid spreading pollen that may become attached to clothing. Leave shoes and coats outside or in a mudroom with tile or linoleum flooring if possible so as not to drag pollen through the house or get it on carpeting and furniture.

Step 3

Wear a mask if you must go outside to garden or cut the grass. The National Institute of Environmental Health Services recommends replacing grass with ground cover that doesn't produce as much pollen, such as dichondra or Irish moss. Plant trees that do not produce pollen, such as dogwood, plum or crape myrtle trees. Fig, fur and redwood trees also are low in pollen allergens.

Step 4

Close windows and doors, and don't rely on screens during the months when pollen is most prevalent. Utilize an air conditioner in your home and car to keep cool.

Step 5

Install a high-efficiency particulate arresting (HEPA) filter in your home that will remove most of the pollen that does get inside. The air filters are available for home and office use and come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. Vacuum cleaners with HEPA filters also can help you avoid allergy symptoms caused by lingering pollen.

Tips and Warnings

  • Sign up with a site such as Pollen.com that provides daily pollen alerts for every area in the country. Forecasts are available that can be sent to your mobile phone as well. Pollen.com will even send you a two-day advance email warning of pollen alerts in your area so that you can make arrangements to stay indoors whenever possible.
  • Pets also can transport pollen inside. Though many people with hay fever also have allergies to pet dander, those who do keep dogs and cats should wash their pets regularly and consider getting shorthaired pets to minimize the amount of pollen you must clean up every time your pet goes outside.
