Classified as a dietary supplement by the Food and Drug Administration, 5-Hour Energy is a 2-oz. drink that claims to boost your energy. There are three types of 5-Hour Energy: regular, decaf and extra strength. According to 5-Hour Energy, the "regular" shots have about as much caffeine as a cup of coffee, the "decaf" contains 6 mg caffeine and the "extra strength" contains about as much caffeine as a 12-oz. coffee. However, the website doesn't disclose the actual amount of caffeine in any type other than the decaf. Because drinking too much caffeine can cause headaches, irritability, abnormal heart rhythms and anxiety, using 5-Hour Energy properly is important.
Step 1
Drink half of the 5-Hour Energy shot if you've never taken this dietary supplement before or if you are sensitive to caffeine. You can store the remaining 5-Hour Energy for up to 72 hours; refrigeration isn't required. If you have used the product before or if you don't have a sensitivity to caffeine, you can drink the entire bottle.
Step 2
Wait at least five hours before drinking another bottle of 5-Hour Energy. Drinking too many shots of this product may cause a caffeine overdose.
Step 3
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water while you are using 5-Hour Energy. The American Heart Association notes that caffeine increases urination and affects the kidneys, which may lead to dehydration.
