Nutrisystem is a type of diet plan that combines portion control with its own kind of food to help people to lose weight. Nutrisystem states that it provides a variety of nutritious foods that can be shipped to your door. By eating Nutrisystem's foods for each meal and snack during a 28-day dieting period, you can lose weight.

Breakfast

Part of the Nutrisystem eating program involves small portions of frequent meals. This includes a breakfast meal for the first eating occasion of the day. Nutrisystem offers various foods for breakfast, including grain products such as cereal and granola bars, and bread products such as blueberry pancakes, chocolate muffins, cinnamon buns or scones. Choose one breakfast item to eat each day.

Lunch

Nutrisystem states it offers more than 150 different entrées in its list of foods to eat. Lunch choices from Nutrisystem include soups such as cream of broccoli, ham and bean or chicken noodle; pasta, such as fettuccine alfredo or three cheese pasta with chicken; salads, including lettuce or Caesar salad, chicken or tuna salad; or potatoes, rice or hot dogs. Choose one lunch entrée per day for a small portion of food for the midday meal.

Dinner

The Nutrisystem diet allows you to eat the foods you order from its plan as well as foods bought from the grocery store to incorporate into your diet. Grocery items you can eat with the Nutrisystem plan include fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. Items from the Nutrisystem dinner checklist include pastas, such as chicken pasta with parmesan, cheese ravioli or macaroni and cheese; soups and stews, including chili or chicken tortilla soup; and meat and vegetable entrees, including sweet and sour chicken, beef stroganoff or meatloaf with mashed potatoes.

Desserts and Snacks

Nutrisystem states that it promotes weight loss by providing foods with a low glycemic index to stabilize the blood-sugar level. According to Florida State University, the glycemic index shows how quickly food is absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the body's cells. Foods with a low glycemic index are absorbed more slowly so your energy lasts longer and you are not hungry again right away. Nutrisystem provides snacks as part of its food checklist, including crackers and snack mixes as well as desserts such as cookies, chocolate bars, brownies and pound cake. Choose one dessert or snack each day as part of the eating plan.
