To become a good basketball shooter, you need to practice the fundamentals of shooting. Only through repetition will you improve your skills and learn the basic forms, handling and follow-through required to be successful. Constant practice will also help you build mental toughness and confidence as well. You can try several different shooting workouts to help improve your game and become a better shooting basketball player.

Flip Drill

The flip drill helps you with your form, follow-through and accuracy. Start off standing close to the basket with the ball in your shooting hand. Shoot the ball using just your shooting hand and try to shoot the ball into the basket without it touching the backboard or rim. Focus on the motion of your wrist and the roll of the ball off your fingers as you take each shot. As you are able to successfully hit several baskets in a row, move to another section of the court close to the basket. You can also use this same drill to practice bank shots off of the backboard as well.

Spot Shooting

Spot shooting is a drill that helps you improve your shooting speed, awareness and accuracy. If you have a practice partner, have him pass you the ball. If you don't have a partner, bounce the ball to yourself or use a backspin bounce to simulate having the ball passed to you. Catch the ball and quickly, in one fluid motion, try to shoot the ball into the basket. Start off close to the basket until you can hit several successful shots in a row. Then increase your distance from the basket and repeat the drill again.

Mikan Drill

The Mikan drill is named after former NBA star George Mikan. This drill helps you improve your shooting accuracy, quickness and offensive rebounding skills. Start off close to the basket and take a right-handed hook shot off the backboard while using only your left leg to jump. Rebound the ball and quickly take a left-handed hook shot off the backboard while using only your right leg to jump. Focus on your jumping and keeping both hands on the ball until you take the shot. Also concentrate on getting full extension of your arm when shooting. Repeat the drill several times until you are successful several times in a row. Then increase your distance from the basket and repeat the drill.
