How to Increase Sperm Fertility

To get pregnant, both the man and the woman have to be fertile--the woman has to release an egg, and the man has to release healthy sperm. Good fertility for men involves producing a lot of sperm--structurally sound and healthy sperm--sperm that are able to swim up to the egg and break through to fertilize it. You can do things to ensure sperm viability.

Step 1

Minimize your stress. Stress is related to fertility--specifically, the production of sperm, the Mayo Clinic says. To boost sperm production and prevent problems with sexual function, try meditation, exercise and relaxation techniques to keep stress at bay.

Step 2

Exercise. Getting regular physical activity benefits every part of your body--even your reproductive system. Just be sure not to exercise to the point of exhaustion, as that can actually decrease fertility.

Step 3

Maintain a healthy body weight. The Mayo Clinic says being too heavy or too thin can affect sperm production, both in quantity and in the health and quality of the sperm. With regular exercise, a little calorie-counting and a healthy diet, you can achieve a healthy body weight and increase your chances of producing plenty of healthy sperm.

Step 4

Take antioxidant supplements, which can benefit your overall health, including reproductive health. Antioxidants can increase your chances of producing good, quality sperm, the Mayo Clinic says, so add lots of fruits and vegetables to your diet to get your fill.

Step 5

Add a daily multivitamin to your routine. Men need the vitamins and minerals folic acid, selenium and zinc to produce lots of sperm that are healthy and good swimmers, the Mayo Clinic says. Taking a multivitamin daily can provide those needed nutrients.

Step 6

Know what to avoid. As many things as there are to do to boost sperm health, many things should be avoided. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco use and drugs--including steroids. You should also keep the genital area cool, avoiding hot baths, tight pants and underwear that can boost the temperature. When you're having intercourse, skip the lubricant as it can slow sperm down--unless it has a vegetable base, the Mayo Clinic says.

Tips and Warnings

  • Once you've boosted your fertility, maximize the chances of getting pregnant by timing sexual intercourse for when the woman is ovulating.
  • If you experience difficulty conceiving a child, see a doctor to have your sperm tested.
