Things to Do in July in Sacramento & San Francisco

San Francisco and Sacramento, both located in Northern California, offer a variety of events and festivals year-round, for all ages. In July, parades, live music, and fireworks displays celebrate the fourth, as well as an annual rodeo in Sacramento and prestigious marathon in San Francisco. The cities are roughly 75 miles apart.

July Fourth in San Francisco

Every year on the fourth of July, the sky just above Pier 39 in the San Francisco Bay lights up with a million dollar fireworks display. They can be seen all over the city but are best viewed from Fisherman's Wharf, the Cannery and Ghirardelli Square. Festivities begin around 3 p.m., including free live music and performances, and the fireworks begin to shoot off around 9:30 p.m.

July Fourth in Sacramento

Every year, the city of Sacramento celebrates the fourth of July by putting on display several firework shows in various areas of the county. Cal Expo provides the largest display, beginning at 9:30 p.m., although festivities begin in the late afternoon. Carmichael, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Folsom and Rancho Cordova all begin their fireworks around the same time and each offers various parades and live music that begin at different times.

San Francisco Marathon

In the month of July, San Francisco offers a marathon throughout the city and even over the Golden Gate Bridge. Participants that choose to either run the first or second half, or attempt the entire length of 26 miles. An alternate 5 K race is offered for novice runners as well as a small Munchkin Run for children. The race usually takes place in the later days of the month.

The Sacramento Folsom Professional Rodeo

In the early days of July, Sacramento is home to the Folsom Professional Rodeo. Each night is filled with live music and rodeo action fit for all ages. After the main events, the action continues, for everyone 21 and over, in a nearby saloon where riders and fans can mingle and enjoy a variety of mixed drinks. The rodeo also hosts its own celebration on July fourth with an in-house fireworks display.
