If your scalp itches and you notice white flakes in your hair and on your shoulders, you may have a common condition known as seborrheic dermatitis, according to Columbia University Medical Center. Seborrheic dermatitis is the main cause of dandruff, a harmless, irritating and sometimes embarrassing condition. Remedies involve the use of topical treatments and medicated cleansers to control the itch and inhibit the development of dry, flaky skin.

Step 1

Wet your hair and squeeze a quarter-size amount of the dandruff shampoo into the palm of your hand.

Step 2

Massage the dandruff shampoo into your hair and scalp. Rotate your fingertips in a circular motion, covering your entire scalp with the dandruff shampoo.

Step 3

Leave the dandruff shampoo on your hair and scalp for five minutes. Rinse the shampoo with warm water.

Step 4

Blot your hair dry with a clean towel, removing as much excess water as you can. Allow your hair to air-dry afterward instead of using a blow-dryer. Blow-drying is excessively drying to your scalp and can make the itching and flaking worse.

Step 5

Repeat the process every other day. If you wash your hair daily, alternate your normal shampoo with the dandruff shampoo.

Tips and Warnings

  • Speak to your physician if the flaking and itching does not resolve. A physician may prescribe oral or topical medications that can help improve your condition.
  • Try to avoid scratching your scalp, especially with your fingernails. Scratching can damage the skin of your scalp. If bacteria from your fingernails enter these damaged areas, infection may occur.

Things You'll Need

  • Dandruff shampoo
  • Clean towel
