The Miracle Cleanse Lemonade Diet, also known as the Master Cleanse, is a detox fast that involves drinking only the lemonade mixture containing purified water, organic lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Although not specifically a weight-loss diet, you will lose weight, since you will consume only about 1,000 calories daily.

History of the Master Cleanse

Developed by Stanley Burroughs in 1941, the Master Cleanse was designed to relieve chronic health problems in as little as 10 days. Burroughs believed that the body has a natural ability to heal itself if accumulated toxins could be removed. The cleanse fell out of public favor until the 1970s when Peter Glickman published a modern version of the fast in his book "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days" and a new generation discovered the benefits of Burroughs' work.

Theory Behind the Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse was formulated to remove toxins from your body that may cause disease. Your body uses a lot of energy in digestion, so in theory, if your body didn't have to work so hard to process food, it could spend that energy healing.
The base of the lemonade is purified water, which will help flush out your system. Lemon alkalizes the blood and brings your pH level back into balance. Maple syrup adds essential vitamins and minerals and supplies enough sugar for energy, and cayenne pepper has a thermogenic effect, speeding up the body's metabolism.
Drinking the lemonade is only one part of the cleanse; you are also meant to start the day with a saltwater flush, as well as drink a laxative tea every evening.

The Lemonade Recipe

The specific proportions of the lemonade are:

10 ounces of distilled or purified water
2 tbsp organic lemon juice, freshly squeezed
2 tbsp organic maple syrup, B grade, which has more minerals
1/10 tsp organic cayenne pepper powder

Drink at least six, but no more than 10, glasses daily. Freshness matters, so do not mix up one large batch in the morning. Lemon juice will spoil in 8 hours, so you may be able to make two batches a day, if making the drink glass by glass is not possible.

Pros of the Miracle Cleanse Lemonade Diet

Compared to other cleansing systems, the lemonade is simple and inexpensive to make. It is an effective way to clean out the colon and digestive tract and may help to improve digestive functions. Your digestive system is closely linked with your immune system, so this cleanse may also boost your immune system, making it easier to fight illness. You will lose weight on the Miracle Cleanse Lemonade Diet and it can be an excellent starting point for a healthier lifestyle or as a transition to a raw foods diet.

Cons of the Miracle Cleanse Lemonade Diet

You will lose weight on the Miracle Cleanse Lemonade Diet, but most of it will be water weight, not fat; and you will probably gain some of the weight back after you start eating regular foods. Common detox symptoms are headaches, fatigue, irritability and acne as the toxins leave your body. You may experience withdrawal from caffeine or sugar and have cravings.

The Miracle Cleanse Lemonade Diet is not recommended for children, if you are pregnant or nursing.
