The acai berry and its juice are the main component in the Acai Berry Diet. The acai berry comes from trees that are closely related to palm trees. These trees can be found throughout South America, according to the website Acai Berry Research & Info. Acai berries contain high levels of antioxidants and other nutrients. There are two types of acai berries: white and black. The black acai berries are mainly used in the acai berry diet.

Health Benefits

The acai berry's antioxidant properties, high amounts of vitamins C and E and fiber-rich ingredients helps maintain a healthy digestive tract. Approximately one third of the berry's weight is nutritional fiber. The nutrition value of the acai berry juice may boost the immune system and the extra fiber may offer weight loss benefits. As part of a balanced diet it may work in conjunction with the other foods to promote additional weight loss.

Weight Loss

The Acai Berry Diet purports that drinking acai juice helps you lose weight quickly. Drinking the juice in place of other less nutritious beverages like sugar-laden sodas may eliminate empty calories and add more nutrients. This may contribute to some weight loss, but it does not guarantee a person will lose large amounts of weight.

Expense

According to Rain Tree Nutrition, acai berries and their juice are staples in the South American regions where they are grown. Acai drinks can be bought for $2 a liter in South American villages, as of 2010. In the United States, drinks associated with the Acai Berry Diet can sell for as much as $35 for a 32-oz. bottle.

In many cases, the cost of purchasing the amount of acai berry juice needed to make the diet work is not economically feasible for people who are on a fixed or limited income.

Quality and Effectiveness

Acai berry juice is regulated as a food, not as a drug. Few studies support the claims acai berry diet proponents make regarding weight loss and little testing has been done to prove the berry's effectiveness.
Since acai berry juice is treated as a food, producers process it according to food standards. Each manufacturer sets standards as to how much acai berry juice is actually in the diet product. Little regulation is put in place to ensure adequate amounts of acai berry juice are in the finished diet product.
