Toric contact lenses, designed for people who have astigmatism (irregularly shaped cornea), are similar to ordinary soft and RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) lenses. In fact, the only difference is the shape. Toric contact lenses curve at different angles to accommodate astigmatism, allowing them to cling to your eyes as they move or blink. Removing your toric contact lenses may require some practice in order to get it right.
Step 1
Wash your hands with soap and water before removing your toric contact lenses. Dry your hands afterward using a clean towel.
Step 2
Hold your lower eyelid between your thumb and index finger. Pull down gently, exposing the lower edge of the contact lens.
Step 3
Raise your eyes up toward the ceiling and touch the index finger of your other hand to the lower edge of the toric lens. Gently slide the lens downward toward the white of your eye.
Step 4
Give the toric lens a slight squeeze, separating it from your eye. Pull the contact lens away from your eye using your thumb and index finger of one hand, while continuing to pull your lower eyelid down with the other.
Step 5
Place the toric contact lens in a lens case filled with contact lens cleaning solution. Repeat the process on your other eye.
Tips and Warnings
- Keep in mind that the insertion and removal of any type of contact lens can be difficult until you get the hang of it. Practice makes perfect. You may not be able to remove your toric contact lenses on the first try. If you continue to have difficulties, see if you can have a family member or friend assist. Ask your physician for help if necessary.
- Never attempt to remove your contact lenses without washing your hands first. Bacteria and other pathogens on your hands can easily transfer to your eyes, causing an infection.
