There are a variety of drugs that can aid in weight loss. Many of these compounds are most suitable in treating clinical obesity and are not for those interested in losing small amounts of weight. These drugs are most effective in conjunction with a healthy diet and fitness regimen and often require the supervision of a medical professional.
Orlistat
Orlistat is available in both prescription and over-the-counter dosages. It can help in treating overweight people who may also have alternate medical conditions, like hypertension, high cholesterol, heart disease or diabetes, according to MedlinePlus. It functions as a lipase inhibitor, which blocks fat from absorbing into the intestines and expels in through the stool. Recommended dosing is one pill, three times per day, one hour before each meal, MedlinePlus says. Common side effects include oily spotting on clothing and underwear--sometimes with gas, oily or fatty stools, loose stools, bowel movement urgency, irregular menstrual periods, headache and anxiety.
Phentermine
Phentermine is a prescription appetite suppressant with a chemical structure similar to amphetamines, according to Drugs.com. It is helpful in treating obesity with associated risk factors of hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol. Due to its similarity to amphetamine, it can be habit-forming and is not suitable for those with a history of drug abuse or addiction, Drugs.com warns. Phentermine is for short-term use only and tolerance can develop within a few weeks, according to RX List.
Benzphetamine
Benzphetamine, like phentermine, is a prescription stimulant that works by suppressing the appetite. Usually dosing is 25 to 50mg once per day in the midmorning or midafternoon, according to Drugs.com. Treatment length is generally no longer than four weeks. Common side effects include restlessness, headache, dizziness, increased sweating and dry mouth. This drugs is not recommended if you are pregnant, have glaucoma, an overactive thyroid or severe hypertension.
