Healthy meals consist of providing ingredients that help the body function at its best metabolic rate. A healthy meal plan will provide sources of low-fat protein, complex carbohydrates and a limited amount of starch. The human body needs nutrition to keep up with the daily challenges life provides including stress and illnesses, such as the common cold.

Breakfast and Oatmeal

Oatmeal is basic but nutritionally sound. Its filled with vitamins and minerals. Fruit such as strawberries, peaches or bananas can be added to the cereal, which will add to the flavor. You can also add a small amount of skim milk or fruit juice to oatmeal.

Another idea for breakfast is poached eggs on whole-grain toast. On a cold day, poached eggs will seem like a treat. They are nutritious, providing protein, calcium and vitamins A and D.

Lunchtime and Grilling

Grilled food is easy and quick, as well as tasty. Use skewers to grill favorite fruits and vegetables. A skewer filled with broccoli, shrimp and lemon slices will taste good. The benefits of a green vegetable along with fish cannot be beat. Chicken lining a skewer as well as onion and black olives adds a different taste to lunch. You also can use a blender to create a fruit smoothie to go along with grilled food, providing both good taste and nutrition without excess fat or calories.

Dinnertime Salad Meals

The lightest meal of the day should be dinner. This is a time when the body is slowing down to get ready for sleep. Fresh spinach, romaine lettuce, cucumber, grilled chicken pieces, a light spray of croutons, balsamic vinegar dressing, garlic and favorite cheese can fill the salad bowl. A helping of tomatoes and fresh black olives will add even more color and vitamins to the already vitamin- and mineral-enriched salad.
