BMX biking is a form of bicycling that involves performing tricks by manipulating a bicycle on the street or around courses made of dirt and concrete. Whether used for racing, doing tricks or because you favor the style, the popularity of BMX bikes continues to grow. But be warned a day of riding can easily be ruined by an injury, so knowing how to use BMX safety equipment can greatly reduce your risk of getting hurt.

Helmets

BMX helmets are made of EPS foam, with a hard covering made of plastic or a composite material such as fiberglass or carbon fiber. The helmets usually feature air vents and adjustable chin straps. There are two main types: The first is a round helmet that provides protection to the top of the head and ears; the other type is a replica of a motocross racing helmet with a visor on top and an elongated section that covers the front of the of the mouth.

Pad Sets

Another piece of BMX safety equipment is referred to as a pad set. Pad sets are a made of foam with a vinyl covering that snaps, fastens or zips on. This combination of pads protects the rider from the part of the bike they may come in contact with in the event of an accident. Pad sets are most commonly offered in three pieces and cover the stem, the cross bar of the handle bars and the top tube of the bicycle frame.

Elbow, Knee and Shin Pads

Elbow, knee and shin pads are extra padding for areas of the body that are most likely to make contact with the riding surface when BMX biking. Lightweight and solid, the pads are made of hard plastic that is lined with foam, and fasten to the user with Velcro or elastic, leaving the user with full flexibility.The pads are also available in a variety of sizes to fit different sized riders.

Gloves

BMX gloves provide the rider with cushioning from the road or track, and the ability to keep a firm grip on the handle bars. Made of stretchable materials, they are kept on the hands with Velcro. Aside from offering the rider comfort, they also add another layer of protection from a fall with their tough padded palms.

Warning

BMX safety equipment can help protect you from injury, but so can knowing your skill level. If you ever crash or fall, check your safety equipment, and replace if needed.
