Proactiv Solution is a commercial acne product sold through mail order or at shopping center kiosks. The product is named for the word proactive, meaning "taking the initiative or first step." The main product consists of a benzoyl peroxide--based cream, and the company Guthy-Renker has expanded the product line to include toners, moisturizes and facial masks. Proactiv has been on the market since 1994, according to the company's website. Symptoms of using Proactiv are similar to symptoms of using over-the-counter benzoyl peroxide products.
Dryness
Skin may appear tight. White flakes may appear on skin where it has started to peel off. You may fell an itching sensation as a side effect to the dry skin, and skin may have a red appearance.
Light Sensitivity
The solution may increase skin's sensitivity to light. Always wear a sunscreen containing a moisturizer of SPF 15 or higher. If it's worn of the face, wear a wide brim hat for shade. Avoid tanning beds and other forms of artificial light.
Discoloration of Clothing
Clothing near the neck and face, such as collars and turtlenecks, may become discolored or have a bleached appearance because of the benzoyl peroxide. Try to avoid wearing these types of clothing when using Proactiv.
Red Bumps or Hives
The appearance of red bumps or hives may be an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide. To test for skin sensitivity, apply it to a dime-size area at the nape of your neck.
Using in Combination with Additional Acne Medications
Because of the small amount of benzoyl peroxide used in Proactive, 2.5 percent, it is generally OK to use with other mild forms of acne treatment. However, consult with a skin care specialist to avoid overdrying and additional symptoms.
