The Motley Fool.com personal finance web site notes that Americans spend $110 billion a year on fast food. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.gov states that in 2008 to 2008, 34 percent of Americans were obese. Americans use fast food as a way to balance the fast track lives that they lead. This is contributing to an epidemic of obesity. Fast food chains are not oblivious to the bad press they receive regarding their menus. Some of the chains have added low calorie fast foods to their menus.
McDonalds
For breakfast, McDonalds has an English muffin that has 160 calories and 3g of fat in it without any butter or margarine. An egg Mcmuffin sandwich contains 300 calories, 12g of fat and 800mg of sodium. For lunch or dinner, McDonalds offers some salad selections that are lower in calories. For instance, a 7.5 oz serving of premium Caesar salad without chicken has only 90 calories, 4g of fat and 180mg of sodium. A premium Caesar salad with grilled chicken presents with 220 calories, 6g of fat and 820 mg of sodium. Their fresh and yogurt parfait has a 160 calories, 2g fat and 85 mg of salt.
Burger King
At Burger King, an egg and cheese croissanwich is 300 calories, 16 grams of fat and 690 mg of sodium. This is the least number of calories they offer in a breakfast meal according to their nutritional website content. A simple, single flame broiled hamburger contains 260 calories, 10 grams of fat and 490 mg of sodium. Compared to their triple whopper which has 1130 calories, 75 grams of fat and 1110 mg of salt, the simple flame broiled hamburger is low calorie fare. Their tendergrill salad is filled with 490 calories, 30 grams of fat and 1600 mg of sodium. The side garden salad has 330 calories, 26 grams of fat and 770 mg of sodium.
Subway
Subway's breakfast sandwiches are the lowest in calories of the three chains. Their double bacon, egg and cheese sandwich has 220 calories, 10 grams of fat and 640 mg of salt. They also offer an egg white and cheese sandwich with 140 calories, 3.5 grams of fat and 490 mg of sodium. Their advertised 6 inch sandwiches with 6 grams of fat range in calories between 230 calories for the veggie delight and 380 calories for the sweet onion chicken teriyaki sandwich. Sodium content is still high and ranges from 410 to 1200 mg of salt.
