A detox fast occurs before beginning a strict diet for cleansing the body by removing toxins, according to MayoClinic.com. The fasting portion allows the organs of the body to rest and prepare for the introduction of the detoxifying foods or beverages to your system. Several detox diets exist, with the lemonade diet being the most longstanding and popular. Of the popular detox plans, most require a fasting period or induction before beginning use of the concoction aimed at cleansing the toxins from your body. Individuals begin a detox diet to lose weight, purify the liver or kidneys and as a means for beginning healthier nutrition habits.

Step 1

Read the particulars of fasting in your chosen detox diet plan. Choose the detox diet plan that will work best for your health needs. Thoroughly review the instructions on how long to fast before beginning the strict diet. Detox plans such as the Master Cleanse or lemonade diet require one day of juicing and fasting, but other detox plans require up to three days of fasting before the diet beginning.

Step 2

Go to the store and buy fruit and vegetable juices as well as broth and water. Gaiam Life online indicates that a juice fast is an effective way to release toxins. Buy low-sodium, low-sugar fruit juices, vegetable juices and chicken broth. During fasting, you will need nourishment, and these forms of liquids provide nutrients and proteins. Get plenty of water for your fast. You will drink 64 oz. or more a day during your fast.

Step 3

Stop eating whole foods two or three days before beginning the actual detox diet. Determine your fasting start date and remove whole foods from your kitchen. You can lock the foods away or use the products up before beginning the fast. Fasting is not necessarily filling to the appetite, and the fewer temptations you have, the easier the process will be.

Step 4

Drink your fasting liquids at the same time you would normally consume meals. Consume your liquids for breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as for snacks. Drink water in between the meals.
