High protein diets are one option in the range of weight loss and diet plans. The main concept with a high protein diet plan is for dieters to increase protein, lower carbohydrates and take in minimal amounts of fat. Three well-known high protein diets are The South Beach Diet, Atkins Diet and Zone Diet.

South Beach Diet

The South Beach Diet was created by Dr. Arthur Agatston, an experienced cardiologist. The diet is described as neither a low fat nor a low carbohydrate plan, rather a method that teaches you to rely on the right carbs and the right fats. There are four phases to the diet. The first two phases last for a specific time frame, while the third phase is a maintenance phase that lasts indefinitely. The goal of phase one is to eat three meals a day so that you are fully filled, and to eliminate your cravings for starches and sweets. Phase two lasts until you reach your desired weight, and lets you eat some foods that were banned in phase one, including whole grain breads and dairy foods. Phase three is all about maintenance of that weight. According to the SouthBeachDiet.com, the South Beach Diet is more about changing a lifestyle rather than doing a fad diet. This healthy diet plan teaches you to make healthier eating choices and encourages regular physical activity.

Atkins Diet

The Atkins diet is a low carbohydrate diet created in 1972 by cardiologist Robert C. Atkins. As explained at Atkins.com; when you change the balance of carbs, fats and protein in your diet, you boost your energy level and keep it on an even keel. The diet plan is based around four important phases. As you proceed through the phases, you add more carbs, focusing on nutrient dense ones and avoiding refined grains and sugars. All the while, you are monitoring your weight and staying at a carb level where you are still losing. Gradually, you transition to phase four and can eat from a wide variety of foods while controlling carbohydrate intake to ensure weight maintenance and a sense of well being.

Zone Diet

The Zone Diet, created by Dr. Barry Sears stabilizes insulin levels in the body. The diet consists of lean meat and low-fat dairy, low glycemic index carbohydrate foods from vegetables and fruits, and good fats. At each meal a person eats at a "40:30:30" ratio of calories obtained daily from carbohydrates, proteins and fats, respectively. Frequent meals are required to keep the insulin level stable. The diet requires three meals a day plus two snacks. ZoneDiet.com explains there are a number of foods that you can add to any Zone meal that will provide you with an abundant variety of meals.
