About Non Surgical Treatment to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks take place in the middle layer of the skin called the "dermis." They are caused when the skin gets stretched too far when high amounts of weight are gained or lost. The medical name for these is "striae" and they appear as long, reddish-colored lines on the skin.

Significance

Stretch marks are not a life-threatening condition. They are merely a reaction that takes place in the skin that is caused from another stimulus. Although they do not cause physical pain, they can cause a person to be self-conscious.

Function

Stretch marks have a tendency to fade away over the course of time. When they do not, steps can be taken to help reduce their appearance and not make them as noticeable on the skin. That is the main function of non-surgical treatments.

Cream

Stretch marks that are fairly new can be treated with a prescription cream called tretinoin. This is applied to the areas where stretch marks are and it can help promote a skin nutrient called collagen. The end result is the stretch marks blend in more closely to your normal skin color.

Laser

A laser treatment done with an excimer laser simulates the melanin in your skin. This is what gives your skin its color. The stretch marks are hit with the laser beam and when it works, they become similar to your surrounding skin color.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that involves tiny aluminum oxide crystals. They get blasted into the skin with a hand-held device and then vacuumed off. This in turn removes the top layer of skin and the stretch marks become less noticeable. If you have older stretch marks, this option can be effective.

Misconceptions

Stretch mark "miracle" creams, supplements and herbal formulas are often times promoted to remove stretch marks. These might be able to benefit the body in some ways, but they cannot get rid of stretch marks. Be on guard for any products that seem too good to be true.
