Hypnosis is a procedure that may be effective in helping to treat undesired emotions or behaviors, such as smoking. According to the smoking cessation website QuitSmokingSupport.com, research shows that the success rate for smoking cessation using hypnosis is just over 66 percent, which is considerably higher than the success rates of other smoking-cessation methods, including cold turkey, behavioral therapy and nicotine-replacement products. Although hypnosis is most effective when conducted in-person in an office setting, there are many legitimate online sources for hypnotherapy online, which makes it more accessible and affordable to the average person.

Step 1

Find a reputable online hypnosis provider or purveyor of hypnosis downloads. Choose a source that offers hypnosis downloads developed by licensed practitioners, preferably who have training in psychology, medicine or social work. You may find some that are free, but more than likely you will have to pay for a download from a reputable source.

Step 2

Download the smoking-cessation hypnosis recordings. Depending on the program you choose, there may be just one download or several.

Step 3

Read any instructions that may come with your chosen program about how to use the recordings. If it advises you to listen in a particular order, or at a certain time of day, or for a certain amount of time each day, be sure to do so.

Step 4

Listen to the recordings at a time and in a space that you will be unlikely to be interrupted. If you listen at a time when you are more relaxed and open, hypnosis will be more effective.

Step 5

Continue to listen to the recordings on a daily or weekly basis, depending on the instructions. If you find that you need reminders during to day to help you avoid reaching for a cigarette, carry the recordings with you on a portable MP3 player so that you can listen whenever you need to. Some people find that just one session of hypnosis is enough to make them stop smoking forever, but other people find they need to undergo ongoing hypnosis in order to keep the cravings at bay.

Tips and Warnings

  • Hypnosis may be effective as an adjunct treatment. Consult your doctor if you are currently using medication or other methods of treatment.
