No matter what skin type you have, everyone's complexion needs care to keep it healthy and vibrant. New Jersey dermatologist Jeanine Downie, M.D., suggests using a facial chemical peel to exfoliate your skin, fight acne, get rid of discolorations and achieve a smoother, more even-textured face. You can ask your dermatologist about in-office peels, or you may apply an at-home version. Either way, use complementary products to get the most out of your peel.
Use a Gentle Cleanser
Cleaning your skin twice a day will help it to better absorb the active ingredients found in your chemical peel. "Marie Claire" advises using a gentle cleanser to avoid drying out your skin or causing any irritation, which may be exacerbated by the peel's strong ingredients. If you have acne, "Cosmopolitan" states that you can use a cleanser that contains salicylic acid, which will work in conjunction with the chemical peel to fight breakouts. Ask your doctor which cleansers are best for your skin if you are unsure, and seek medical attention if you develop any allergic reactions or rashes. You may also alternate the gentle cleanser with the salicylic acid cleanser if you find your skin becoming dry or irritated.
Apply a Chemical Peel Weekly
Deep exfoliation with a weekly chemical peel helps rid your skin of the dead cells and other pore-clogging buildup that can cause acne and leave you with a dull, rough-looking complexion. "Cosmopolitan" notes that chemical peels containing glycolic acid not only encourage skin cell renewal, but they also encourage your skin's production of collagen, which will firm your skin and help it look and feel suppler. Dr. Downie states that both glycolic and salicylic acid peels work to refine your skin's texture and tone while also combating wrinkles and acne. At night, smooth a thin layer of the product you choose over clean, dry skin. Allow it to dry for a few minutes, and then rinse it off with a washcloth and lukewarm water. Pat dry.
Slather on the Sunscreen
Maintain the benefits of your chemical peel by applying sunscreen daily, whether you are outdoors or not. Dr. Downie notes that ultraviolet rays can cause facial discolorations and fine lines, and anti-aging and anti-acne products like chemical peels can make your skin more susceptible to this damage. Choose a product that contains SPF 30 or higher and smooth it on every morning, reapplying as the day goes on if you are exposed to sunlight. If you find that the chemical peel is making your skin dry, "Marie Claire" suggests looking for a moisturizer with sunscreen that also contains skin-calming botanicals. This will help soothe irritation as well as combat the redness that chemical peels might induce.
