How Do Fruit Diets Work?

Water

Fruits contain the largest water content of any food group. Water is essential to weight loss because it energizes the body and helps reduce cravings, as the body often confuses thirst for hunger. Fruit helps hydrate the body and helps us meet our daily water requirements. Dry fruit has had all of the moisture sucked from it, so it does not contain the same weight-loss benefits of whole, fresh fruit.

Fiber

Fruit is high in fiber, which promotes a healthy digestive tract. Fiber helps satisfy your appetite because it settles in the stomach longer than other substances but does not contain any calories. A diet that is high in fiber will help you feel fuller for a longer amount of time so you avoid over-eating. If you eat a piece of fruit before each meal, the fiber will fill you up so you do not consume as many calories from your meal.

High in Nutrients

Fruit is high in nutrients. These nutrients give your energy to help burn excess calories. Food cravings are often triggered by the body's need for certain nutrients that it lacks. By eating a wide variety of fruit you can supply your body with vital vitamins and minerals to ward off cravings. Fruits also contain sugar that can satisfy a sweet tooth without indulging in mega-high calorie treats that do not leave you feeling satisfied.

Low Energy Density

The water, fiber and nutrients contained in fresh fruit make it a low energy density food. Fruit gives you energy and fills you up, yet it is not a high-calorie food. You could eat several pieces of fruit for the same amount of calories in a candy bar, but within 20 minute of eating a candy bar you will probably feel hungry again, while the fruit can sustain you for hours. Fruit allows you to lose weight without depriving yourself of food because you can eat more food for fewer calories.
