Fad diets that involve strict eating plans and constrictive food choices often claim to give you drastic weight loss. While you may find temporary success on strict diets, you could injure your health and even gain more weight. Before you attempt any sort of strict diet, talk to your doctor about your plans to ensure that you're undertaking a safe diet that will be beneficial to your health, weight and lifestyle.

Features

Each year a number of strict diet plans are written about, reviewed and pushed onto willing consumers who are looking for quick ways to drop weight and find a healthier lifestyle. Whether the diet cuts out entire food groups, like a high-protein, low-carb diet, or is meant to restrict your eating to only one type of food, like a liquid diet, strict food diets can help you lose short-term weight in various ways.

Advantages

You may experience a few benefits from strict food diets, even if there aren't many. If you are the type of person who struggles with making good food choices, a strict food diet can limit your food choices for a no-brainer way to lose weight. Certain strict food diets, like vegetarianism, can help benefit your health as long as you find protein sources elsewhere, notes The Daily Green website. Cutting out certain foods can also help you see fast results, which can be a motivating factor in weight loss.

Disadvantages

Unfortunately, the disadvantages of strict food diets typically outnumber the benefits. Strict food diets are usually a short-term solution only, and they don't teach you how to make healthy food choices. "Time" magazine warns that cutting entire food groups or restricting your diet could lead to vitamin deficiencies. What's more, the magazine estimates that after going off a strict diet, 80 percent of dieters gain the weight lost back within a year. This is the cause of poor eating choices and a newly slowed metabolism responding to a regular diet once again.

Warnings

Before you embark on a strict food diet, talk to your doctor. You may not be healthy enough for your body to be sustained on limited food groups. You may also have deficiencies that your doctor should examine before you cut out certain food groups or switch to a restrictive diet. Strict diets could leave you feeling weak, tired, light-headed and sick.

Alternatives

Rather than relying on strict food diets to limit your food intake, switch to a healthier lifestyle altogether for healthy weight loss and an increase in your quality of life. Fill your cupboards with unprocessed, natural foods, and remember that moderation is key when you're eating at restaurants, at home or while snacking, notes "Self" magazine. Healthy and moderate food choices trump strict fad diets anytime.
