Wilson Golf began its existence in 1914 and since then has developed its product successfully into one of the most prolific irons in golf. In 1954, it introduced its first golf ball, which boasted a 40 percent increase in ball speed off of the club face. Wilson manufactures both the 50/50 and Zip golf balls, which are versatile balls that feature distance, control and soft feel. In addition, the balls are cost effective, making them a quality choice for golfers.
History
Wilson Golf is well known for its irons, which were the leading irons on the PGA tour in the 1980s and 1990s. However, the golf ball brand has also been successful as Wilson introduced the "long ball" in 1954. From there, the Ultra ball, introduced in the 1980s, has far surpassed sales of any other Wilson golf ball in history.
50/50
The Wilson 50/50 has a super-soft core that pushes the limits when it comes to ball velocity. Therefore, one of the major features of the 50/50 ball is its distance off the tee. However, the ball also has a soft cover to combine power with great control and feel.
Zip
The Zip balls offer a multi-layer construction that allows for higher spin, longer distance and a soft feel. Zip’s zero compression rubber core delivers a soft feel with high resilience. The high velocity mantlelayer and resilient ionomer cover results in a combination of distance, feel and spin. The ionomer cover grabs the club face for higher spin and great feel. Wilson Golf claims the ball offers better aerodynamics due to the ball's flat bottomed, shallow dimples that help it to rip through the air to create a more stable, penetrating ball flight.
Zip Awards
According to Wilson Golf, when the Zip golf ball was released in 2008, it was the only three-piece zero compression core ball in the industry. The Zip golf ball has won Gold Award accolades in the annual Golf Digest Hot List.
Price
A dozen Wilson 50/50 golf balls are priced at around $10.99 (as of October 2010). The Wilson Zip ball is $2 more expensive at around $12.99 per dozen (as of October 2010). Lower grade balls for the 50/50 are approximately $7.99 per dozen, while the Zip golf balls go for $8.99 for twelve (prices are as October 2010).
