Ulcerative colitis is a condition that occurs when ulcers form in the rectum and colon due to inflammation. Certain foods may trigger symptoms in some people with ulcerative colitis, but there is inconclusive evidence that specific foods can cause this condition. Malnutrition may occur in ulcerative colitis, because patients may experience a reduced appetite or poor digestion. It is important to eat a well-balanced healthy diet that is adequate in calories, protein and essential nutrients, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Foods High In Fiber

The amount of fiber to include in the diet will vary according to the individual. In some cases, high fiber foods such as dried fruits, beans, lentils, whole-meal breads and peas may lead to diarrhea. When symptoms are less severe, gradually adding more fiber back into the diet can be good. For those with constipation, it is important to include a sufficient amount of fiber in the diet. Other high-fiber foods include fresh fruits and vegetables and whole-grain cereals.

Dairy

Some people with ulcerative colitis may not be able to properly absorb lactose efficiently. Lactose is the sugar found in dairy products, such as milk and yogurt. The University of Maryland Medical Center says that unabsorbed lactose may lead to diarrhea and abdominal discomfort. Dairy products such as butter and cheese may be well-tolerated in moderation. Milk may also be tolerated in small amounts, but this will vary among individuals.

Fats

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, a person with ulcerative colitis may be unable to absorb fat efficiently. The consumption of too much fat in the diet may lead to diarrhea and other pain symptoms. It is important to choose healthy fats over saturated fats or margarine. Healthy fat choices that may be consumed in moderation include avocados, olive oil, flaxseed, nuts and seeds and low-fat protein sources.
