Things do not always go right, and difficulties will always appear in different aspects of your life. The key to happiness is not to try and avoid those problems but to know how to deal with them as they appear. Because happiness is such a subjective word, it's important to understand yourself in order to achieve a balanced, happy life.
Step 1
Know what makes you happy. Many people are lost in the everyday routine and responsibilities and forget to take time to understand themselves and what they really want in life. Make a list of the things that bring you joy, and include both the small things (spending time with animals) and the big things ( a raise at work), so you have something to work toward.
Step 2
Set attainable goals. If you want things that can't be achieved (such as lose 30 pounds in a week), you're likely to experience disappointment when things don't work out. Make clear goals that take you towards your goal in small, workable steps,
Step 3
Have a coping mechanism in place. Whether it is loved ones to talk to, a therapist or meditation and prayer, having something that provides comfort will help you deal with stress and sadness when life is difficult.
Step 4
Respect yourself. Do positive things for both your body and your mind, such as exercising and keeping a healthy weight. Work on developing your inner self and finding ways to deal with stress.
Step 5
Maintain a positive outlook. See problems as stepping stones or chances to grow and learn. Avoid dwelling on what hurts, especially if there's little you can do to change the situation. Instead, focus on the future and what you can do to improve your life.
Step 6
Do things that make you laugh. Watch a comedy, attend a comedy show or ride a roller coaster. Those things keep your inner child alive and will help you get through the more difficult times.
Step 7
Keep a gratitude journal to remind yourself of the good things in life. Simply take 5 minutes before bed each night and write down five good things that happened that day. They can small (good ice cream) or big (receiving a promotion). When you're feeling blue, revisit your journal to remind yourself of the good things in life.
