How to Choose a Weight Loss Camp

Weight loss camps are available for both children and adults. There are a variety of camps with different program goals, guidelines and expectations. Before choosing a weight loss camp, it's important to understand what you want from a camp and what a camp can do for you. Evaluating both of these factors and asking a few basic questions will help you choose a camp that will provide the best experience and results.

Step 1

Evaluate the kind of programming each camp offers and compare it to the kind of programming you want. Some camps offer cooking classes, therapeutic support and grocery-shopping lessons. Other camps are more focused on exercise. Look for a camp that most closely matches your needs.

Step 2

Check the camp's track record. Ask for relevant statistics, such as the average weight loss per previous resident. Read any online reviews or published testimonials available. Ask previous campers for unbiased opinions rather than relying only on testimonials provided by the camp.

Step 3

Consider how each camp handles meals. Ask if you learn to prepare your own meals or if you will have preprepared meals. Confirm that the menu will accommodate your specific dietary needs, including food allergies and moral or religious food preferences.

Step 4

Ask about the staff qualifications. Some camps offer nutritionists, personal trainers and medical professionals, while others are staffed by teen counselors or community members. Read your camp's brochure or website for this information or make a call to the camp director.

Step 5

Search for the best location. Choose a camp close to home or a destination camp with your favorite kind of scenery and weather. Determine if you'll be allowed to leave camp to sight-see if you choose a destination camp.

Step 6

Determine costs and financing. The more programs, amenities and highly trained staff members, the more the camp will cost. Budget realistically and choose a camp within your price range. Ask about any discounts, scholarships, payment plans and application fees.
