Allergies are often characterized as adverse immune responses to foreign substances. Whenever the body is exposed to a virus, bacteria or other pathogen, the immune system responds by releasing antibodies that help to protect you from harm. However, your body may begin to falsely recognize other foreign substances, including pollen, pet dander or mold spores, as dangerous. This causes your immune system to overreact, triggering the release of antibodies and leading to symptoms often associated with allergies.
Air Purifiers
Air purifiers are especially helpful in reducing your exposure to airborne allergens, such as pollen, pet dander, mold spores and dust mites, notes the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. By running an air purifier in common living spaces, you actually decrease the amount of allergens in the air. This makes inhalation less likely and thereby minimizes your exposure to allergy-inducing substances.
HEPA
HEPA, or high-efficiency particulate arresting, filters are one of the more effective in air purifying systems. As air passes through the HEPA filter, allergens actually stick to the interior fibers. The emitted air lacks the foreign substance that would normally elicit an allergic response and its associated symptoms.
Symptoms
Airborne allergens typically elicit symptoms quite different from other allergies. Most symptoms involve the respiratory tract, largely due to the method of exposure. It isn't uncommon to experience runny nose, congestion, watery eyes and sneezing when coming into contact with an airborne allergen, like pollen or pet dander, explains MayoClinic.com.
Home Care
Air filters alone won't necessarily remove all airborne allergens from the home. The air must pass through the filter to eliminate the allergen and does nothing for the pollen, pet dander, mold spores or dust mites that have settled in the home. Any disturbance of fabrics can release the allergens into the air and cause an allergic response. For this purpose, the American Academy of Family Physicians recommends regularly cleaning carpets and upholstery with a vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter.
Treatment
Another important facet to reducing symptoms associated with allergies is medications. Even if you're running an air filter or vacuuming regularly, over-the-counter and prescription medications can be used to minimize your body's reaction to the exposure of allergens. Your doctor can recommend the appropriate medication based on your specific allergy.
