San Jose has just the right climate for outdoor evening activity. Warmer and dryer than other spots around San Francisco Bay, the city is also more spread out and offers plenty of space for action. The city is the center of a vibrant metropolitan area full of hi-tech companies, so naturally nightlife is also part of the culture in San Jose.

Dance Clubs

A great way to work up a night-time sweat is on a dance floor. San Jose's club scene is smaller than nearby cities of San Francisco or Oakland, but there is still plenty of night life. Whether you are looking for a hangout that caters to the local college campuses, a Latin dance club, the latest trance hot spot, a live rock show with a dance floor, or a gay or lesbian club, you can find it in central San Jose's club district. Check local listings for DJ and band listings.

Cycling

Cyclists can keep busy at night throughout the week at the popular Hellyar Park Velodrome. The track is well lit and open in the evenings. Cyclists race in categories at different times, so check for details before arriving at the course. Separately, the San Jose Bicycle Club sponsors organized rides around the city with and critiques on Tuesday nights. Registration, fees and rules apply for Tuesday night critiques, so check with the club before making your plans.

San Jose Trails

The city of San Jose maintains 100 miles of hiking trails winding through various neighborhoods and developments within the city limits. The trails are paved and interconnected throughout the entire city. You can hike, skate or cycle through the paths that go through open space, developed areas and parks. The trails are open daily for an hour after sunset for night hikers. The city maintains a database and maps so you can find the closest path from wherever you are in San Jose.

Paintball

Paintball is a relatively new sport compared to others. Since San Jose is a mecca of the hi-tech industry, it might be the perfect place to participate in this competitive sport. You can play in organized teams or join one already in progress. The game is often used to train in agility, flexibility and visual acuity. Santa Clara Paintball operates its field until 10 p.m. twice a week for experienced and novice paint ballers. The playing field is located outdoors with lights for night time play. The field has obstacles and open space to facilitate a highly energetic and competitive game.

Golf

Often when you find a warm climate like the one in San Jose, you will find golfers. San Jose is home to a dozen public courses full of avid players throughout the day. Night golfing is for those who want to add another dimension to the game. Using glow products, night golfers test their game by playing in darkened fields using only glow sticks to expose the holes and glow in the dark balls. In San Jose you can take your night clubs to the Deep Cliff Golf Course as late as 9 p.m. You will need to sign up ahead of time to participate in the night time golfing, but the course offers glow in the dark golf balls to help you get through your game.

Hit the Gym

Not all gyms are open late at night, but San Jose is home to a national chain of health clubs that remain open 24 hours a day. There are four locations for "24 Hour Fitness" in San Jose, including one of the chain's Super Sport locations. Membership is required.
