Ionic foot baths are a staple of Eastern medicine. They operate under the assumption you can detoxify your body through sweat glands, specifically through your feet. Many spas and salons across the world offer them as a service and you can also buy at home kits as well. Though more research must be conducted to determine how effective ionic foot baths are, they offer a way to destress after a hard workout or day at the office.
Step 1
Wash your feet thoroughly with a pumice stone or loofah using warm water and a mild cleanser. You do not want any bacteria reacting negatively to the foot bath cleansing salts. This also helps slough way dead skin cells and softens calluses.
Step 2
Plug in the machine to your ionic foot bath and draw the bath. Gradually incorporate Epsom salts into the bath as the water is running. If you choose, you can also include essential oils such as lavender or peppermint oil. All salts and oils are purchased separately from the ionic foot bath kit itself. Salts and oils can be found at your local drug and health food stores.
Step 3
Soak your feet in the bath for 30 minutes per session, two sessions per week. Wait at least two days between each treatment before doing it again. Be sure you read your instruction manual as every ionic foot bath varies on time and frequency.
Step 4
Read your color chart and compare it to the color of the water after you are done soaking your feet. It is supposed to tell you what toxins have been removed from your body.
Step 5
Dry your feet thoroughly with a clean towel. Focus on bacterial hot spots like the areas between your toes.
Tips and Warnings
- Take notice of the colors in the foot bath once your session is over. Specific colors indicate the part of your body in which the toxins have been removed. The colors are: Black (liver and gallbladder), blue (kidneys), orange (joints), yellow (bladder/urinary tract) and white foam (mucus).
- These indicators are not backed by scientific research. Do not replace conventional medicine with a foot bath and consult your doctor before beginning this program.
