You've probably used the term "setting" when referring to an overhead volleyball pass. Unlike the traditional underhand "bump," where you use your forearms to pass the volleyball, an overhead pass uses the pads of your fingers to direct the ball. Typically you would want to use an overhead pass when you're receiving a high, short serve where the ball passes above your shoulders and head.

Seated Passing

The seated passing drill works on overhead passing accuracy. Split your team up into groups of two to four players. Each group has a single ball. Have the groups sit on the ground with only a few feet between each player. One player starts the drill by tossing a high toss to another player, who then uses an overhead pass to pass the ball to another player. The drill continues, and players should count how many times they accurately pass the ball without losing control. Emphasize to the players the importance of passing the ball when it's directly over their head and shoulders. If the ball is too far to one side or the other, the players will be more likely to lift the ball or accidentally perform a double hit.

Serve Receive

As the coach, stand against the net in the setters' position, acting as the target. Instruct your players to form two lines: one line on the same side of the net as you, in a back row defensive position, and the second line on the opposite side of the net in a server's position. Instruct the serving line to move into the court at least at the beginning of the drill. When you say "Go," the first person in the serve line serves the ball over the net, making sure to perform a high, short serve. The first person in the receiving line moves up to receive the ball and performs an overhead pass aimed at the target. This drill works on game-like situations and passing accuracy. The players rotate through the two lines so that they have the opportunity to serve and receive.

Team Passing

Set up six players in the regular volleyball positions on both sides of the net. Stand just outside of the court with a ball. During the team passing drill, the only acceptable ball touch is the overhead pass, so the teams must work together to perform accurate and high overhead passes. When you start the drill by throwing a free ball to one team, that team must perform three overhead passes before sending the ball over the net, then the other team must also perform three overhead passes. If a team fails to perform three passes, or if team members make another error, the opposing team gets a point. Play to five before switching sides or rotating in another team.
