Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of sharp uric acid crystals in the joints, according to MayoClinic.com. In some cases, the body produces too much uric acid or the kidneys don't flush uric acid out of your body properly. When this occurs, crystals form in the joints, causing pain and inflammation. Gout is known to be hereditary, it affects more men than women, and it very often affects the joint of the big toe. The good news is that gout is treatable. Talk with your doctor about treatment options that are appropriate for you.
Step 1
Drink plenty of fluids. Consume water and nonalcoholic fluids to help flush uric acid from your body. Drink 8 to 16 oz. of fluid each day during an attack of gout, according to MayoClinic.com. Ask your doctor which fluids you should consume to help your body eliminate uric acid.
Step 2
Shed extra pounds if you are overweight, according to FamilyDoctor.org. Keep a food diary to evaluate your eating habits and show it to your doctor. Your doctor may recommend a weight-loss program, if necessary.
Step 3
Avoid or limit alcohol consumption. Consuming alcohol causes uric acid levels to rise and interferes with uric acid elimination, according to the National Institutes of Health. If you consume alcohol on a regular basis, talk with your doctor about setting some guidelines.
Step 4
Begin a gout diet to control uric acid production. Limit animal protein and seafood to 4 to 6 oz. each day, according to MayoClinic.com. Eat plant-based protein such as beans and legumes, and consume fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Also, add low-fat or fat-free dairy products to your diet and avoid sugar.
Step 5
Talk with your doctor about medication. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen are available over the counter and used to control pain and inflammation, according to MayoClinic.com. Cochicine and corticosteroids, also used for pain and inflammation, are available by prescription. Medications that block uric acid production such as xanthine oxidase inhibitors or improve uric acid removal such as probenecid may also be prescribed by your doctor.
