How to Maintain Adrenal Health

The adrenal glands are located on top of each of the kidneys and are designed to help the body recover from stress. The adrenal glands produce hormones that help us cope with the everyday stresses of life, as well as more dangerous situations, offering us that burst of energy needed in the flight-or-fight response that's present in all humans. Learning how to maintain adrenal health is essential for your overall health and well-being.

Reduce Stress

Step 1

Reduce stress levels in your life to help give your adrenal glands a break. One of the best ways of reducing stress is to engage in daily exercise. Exercise helps rid the body of tension and stress, and releases "feel good" endorphins from the brain that calm and relax the body.

Step 2

Drink plenty of water. Drinking at least 64 oz. of water per day helps keep the body functioning smoothly and reduces stress on the adrenal glands to keep body chemical balances regulated.

Step 3

Find some quiet time every day to rejuvenate the senses, find a center of calm in your busy work or home life and reduce levels of stress, anxiety and pressure. Engage in deep-breathing exercise that help oxygenate the blood and increase circulation.

Step 4

Eat a nourishing and healthy diet rich in vegetables and fruits, and avoid processed sugars in your diet. Good vegetables for adrenal health include yams, beets, carrots and turnips. Eat more nuts and seeds, and add beans and legumes to the diet, as these are a rich fiber source. These foods will also help fight inflammation and regulate blood sugar levels, which will reduce stress on your body.

Step 5

Take a bath in a mixture of water, Epsom salt and vinegar (a tub filled halfway with water, and 1 tbsp. of vinegar and/or Epsom salt) will help pull excess acids from the body and reduce your sense of fatigue.
