Miami Whitewater Forest encompasses 4,345 acres about 30 minutes northwest of Cincinnati. The 85-acre lake offers anglers the opportunity to hook large bass, over-sized catfish, crappy and trout by boat or from shore. The recreation area is more than a fishing haven. With more than 35 miles of trail systems you can get a workout hiking, biking or toning muscles on Parcours Fitness trails.

Fishing Seasons

During spring, lake waters are cool and crappies are abundant until May when they take to deeper water. Bass fishing peaks in May and runs until the beginning of August and you can also battle elusive, giant blue catfish and shovelhead. Legend has it that the ultimate opportunity to catch catfish is when the new moon in August lures them from the depths. Throughout March the lake is stocked with trout and stocks of catfish are replenished in May. Fishing derbies are offered at Miami Whitewater throughout fishing season.

Nature Trails

If the fish aren't biting take a hike on one of 15 nature trails that weave through areas of the forest such as the Farbach-Werner Nature Preserve or Glenwood Gardens. Mountain bike enthusiasts can peddle the difficult, 3-plus mile trail in Mitchell Memorial Forest or take a leisurely ride on paved routes at Winton or Sharon Woods. The paved Shaker Trail has 18 Parcours fitness stations, a mile-long inner loop and a 7.8 mile outer loop that is accessed from the harbour.

Overnight Camping

Miami Whitewater Forest campground has 46 sites with 30-amp electric hook-up nestled in wooded surroundings. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring and picnic table, and on-site amenities include a fully accessible shower facility, dump station and playground. Reservations are accepted up to one year in advance by phone. Pets are welcome.

Considerations

Boat fishing on the lake is permitted with the use of rental boats available from the boathouse or state-licensed private kayaks and canoes. Using your own electric or gasoline trolling motor is permitted, but can not exceed 4 mph. Bank fishing is only allowed from designated areas. All vehicles entering the park must display a valid motor vehicle permit.

Motor Vehicle Permits

A motor vehicle permit is required to enter recreation areas within the Hamilton County Park District. As of 2010, the fee is $3 daily and $10 annually. Permits for the Miami Whitewater Forest may be purchased at local golf pro shops, Ranger stations, visitor centers or from Hamilton County's website.
