Saint Paul is the capital city of Minnesota, where you will discover an abundance of activities for children. While Saint Paul has a variety of concerts and events, there are also cultural activities for children that teach, entertain and inspire. Whether you are interested in indoor or outdoor activities, Saint Paul is a diverse city with year-round attractions for children.

Zoo

The Como Park Zoo and Conservatory is an affordable kid-friendly destination, run by the Parks and Recreation Department of Saint Paul. Animals you can see at the Como Zoo include gorillas, lions, tigers, zebras, seals, penguins, sea lions, sloths, orangutans and polar bears. Another feature of the Como Zoo is the half-acre Marjorie McNeely Conservatory, where you can view seasonal flowers, orchids, ferns and bonsai trees. Next to the Como Zoo is the Como Town Amusement Park, with free admission to activities, entertainment and events for kids.

Science Museum

The Science Museum of Minnesota presents you with a variety of learning activities for children, including interactive exhibits, films and traveling exhibits. Permanent galleries at this Saint Paul science museum are designed for you to explore the subjects of technology, physical science, paleontology, the human body and Mississippi River cultures. Kids can also bring along a couple of natural objects to trade at the interactive Collectors' Corner, where you are encouraged to trade your items for shells, skulls, rocks or insects.

Children's Museum

Visiting the children's museum in Saint Paul offers kids hands-on activities, where you can play with finger puppets, toss balls and blow bubbles. There are seven separate galleries at the Minnesota Children's Museum, designed to cultivate curiosity, understanding and a passion for learning. While the children's museum caters to kids between six months to 10 years of age, the atmosphere of learning by playing can be entertaining for kids of all ages.

Riverboat Rides

Whether you are visiting as a family, group or class, riverboat cruises are a way for children to see Saint Paul from a different perspective. Padelford Riverboats has a fleet of historic boats, with tours that take you on Mississippi River cruises. If you are visiting as a class, students from the fourth to sixth grades can take an educational tour to look at aquatic invertebrates through microscopes, study sandstone in the river, see birds with binoculars and tour the riverboat captain's pilothouse.

Historic Sites

While you are visiting Minnesota's capital city, there is the opportunity for children to learn about the state's history. Saint Paul is home to Fort Snelling, which is one of Minnesota's historic sights that allows you to see the state's early Native American, civilian and military life. Costume-wearing tour guides let you see what life was like at this 1820's outpost; view muskets and cannons, as well as where soldiers, slaves and civilians lived.
