The Master Cleanse is a fasting diet. All you eat for the actual fasting part of the process is a drink made from water, juice from fresh lemons, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. Some people choose to start straight away on the fasting portion of this cleansing diet, but the instructions detail "ease in" and "ease out" periods. Please consult your physician before attempting any fad or fasting diets.
Ease-In Day One
This first day of the process is called the living food diet. On this first day, you are meant to eat only foods which are living. The idea is to not consume any processed foods, meat or dairy. Only consume living things such as vegetables and fruits, and consume them raw. The website for the Master Cleanse suggests that you eat about 60% vegetables and 40% fruits, since the fruits are high in sugar.
Ease-In Day Two
The second day of the ease-in phase is called the juices, blends, soups and broths day. On this day you may consume liquids made from juiced fruits or vegetables, or the liquid parts of soups. Juices from living things are most highly recommended, but if a juicer isn't available, soup broths are suggested.
Ease-In Day Three
The third day of the ease-in is called the orange juice day. On this day you are meant to consume nothing at all but orange juice. It is suggested that you drink orange juice from freshly squeezed oranges, but if there is no juicer available, the freshest orange juice that can be found will do.
Beginning the Lemonade Fast
After all three days of ease-in, nothing is to be consumed but the lemonade. The lemonade is made from freshly squeezed lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. This portion of the diet lasts anywhere from three to 10 days, or more if the person feels she can go longer. This part of the diet is not recommended for long periods of time, as there is little to no nourishment being provided into the body.
Ease Out
Once the lemonade only part of the diet is completed, or the person feels he is done, an ease-out phase is suggested to slowly reintroduce foods back into the body. Simply repeat ease in phases again in the reverse order, starting with the orange juice, then the juices and broths, and lastly the raw foods.
