Rutin is a vitamin found in plant-based foods that can also be found in supplement form. It is used to help increase capillary strength and improve the immune system. While not enough information exists concerning the effects of rutin on pregnancy, women who are pregnant or trying to get pregnant are discouraged from taking rutin, as it may cause miscarriage.

Description

Rutin is a bioflavonoid, a water-soluble element derived from plants that may help fight against harmful chemicals in the body that damage cells and may lead to the development of sickness or disease. Rutin strengthens capillaries and regulates the absorption of vitamin C in the body. Rutin is found in plant-based products like noni, black tea, buckwheat, tobacco and some citrus fruits.

Historical Uses

In the book "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year," Susan Weed, a professional natural remedy healer, explains that historically rutin in leaf form was used by women in South America as a method of contraception to prevent pregnancy. While there is no research that proves rutin prevents pregnancy, some women may take rutin several days prior to and after ovulation as a contraceptive measure, according to Weed.

Rutin and Pregnancy

Safescript.com explains that insufficient information exists to determine the effects of rutin on pregnant women, but the use of drugs can be harmful to a developing fetus. Relief-from-hemorrhoids.com claims that while rutin may benefit people who suffer from complications like hemorrhoids, you should not take rutin if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, as rutin may be a contributing factor in miscarriages if taken in high doses during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Health Benefits of Rutin

Rutin may provide a number of health benefits. Phytochemicals.info explains that rutin may reduce problems for people who bleed or bruise easily as well as improve overall immunity. The website also explains that rutin may help reduce swelling in the joints and extremities.

Considerations

Wellness.com states that if you are pregnant or are trying to get pregnant, you should consult with your physician or qualified healthcare professional before taking rutin to make sure that the benefits of taking the supplement outweigh the risks. Rutin may cause health problems if taken in great doses for long periods of time.
