At the horseback riding camps around Nashville, it does not matter if your child is an experienced rider or if she has never seen a horse before; there is a camp for everyone. Horseback riding is a form of physical exercise that promotes balance and coordination. In addition to its physical benefits, horseback riding encourages confidence and teaches responsibility.

Expectations

Horseback riding camps are designed to help children gain exposure to horses. This is done through riding lessons and education instruction such as learning about the anatomy and health of a horse, riding equipment and stable management. In addition to riding, most camps also combine typical summer camp activities such as arts and crafts and games into the schedule. At Free Rein Riding Academy in Hendersonville, Tennessee, children attend a week-long camp that helps them gain exposure to horses through stall cleaning, riding lessons and informational discussions with veterinarians and experienced riders.

Benefits

By attending riding camp, you can expect for your child to improve her riding ability and comfort on a horse. At Paradise Ranch, located 30 miles north of Nashville, children are taught by Certified Horsemanship Association instructors. Lessons are available for beginners through experienced riders. The aim of this ranch is to have children grow physically, spiritually and mentally through the interaction with horses.

Typical Day

A typical day at horseback riding camp will focus heavily on riding instruction, but the camper will learn about a variety of other horse-related topics. At Music City Riding Academy, located 20 minutes from downtown Nashville, children will spend several hours in the arena taking lessons. The day will also include learning how to care for the horse and its equipment and how to groom the horse. Throughout the week, farriers and veterinarians will be on site to discuss medical concerns and potential careers in the equine field.

Clothing

At all the horseback riding camps around Nashville, children must wear proper clothing, footwear and helmets. Helmets must be worn at all times when your child is mounted on a horse. All the barns provide helmets, but you can also purchase your child her own ASTM/SEI-approved helmet. A low-heeled, hard-soled riding boot with riding pants or straight leg jeans is recommended for all campers. If you do not own riding boots, your child may be able to wear tennis shoes.

Cost

Most of the Nashville area summer riding camps run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with slight variations. Several camps offer an extended day option. As of 2010, tuition at the Music City Riding Academy is $200 per week.
