Low Calorie Diets
More sensible models who aren't looking to starve themselves instead lose weight by choosing healthy, but lower calorie diets. That means less indulging in fatty foods and chocolate, and a few more salads. Choosing foods that are low in calorie, but high in nutrients is a sensible way to lose weight, and one that even non-models can try on their own for faster weight loss, without starving or depriving the body of nutrients. Fruits, vegetables, lean protein and water all pack a low-calorie punch for models.
Light Exercise
While you probably won't see models pumping serious iron at the gym, you may see them finding other ways to work out without bulking up. Models must retain their slim, lean appearance, so lifting weights or using weight lifting machines are ditched in favor of exercises like running a treadmill, using an elliptical machine, doing yoga or Pilates, or another form of lower-impact workout that burns calories without causing the body to gain muscle. Anyone can use lower-impact exercise to stay healthy and maintain a better body weight and body mass index.
Cleanses
Some models may resort to using a cleanse to drop a few pounds quickly before an important show. Cleanses restrict you to consuming only things that will help the digestive system work at peak performance to expel build up that may be residing in the system. The popular Master Cleanse restricts you to drinking only lemonade made from lemons, maple syrup and chili powder as a means to cleansing the body of toxins. Of course, this type of fast or cleanse causes the body to drop pounds quickly as well.
Fad Diets
You may find that some models use fad diets to obtain a rail-thin appearance that many designers are looking for. A recent story in "The Daily Squib," a British online news-journal, had one journalist experimenting with some of the fad diets that British models are famous for, including a grape diet, a baby food diet and using various spa treatments to try and lose weight. While some of these may be helpful in dropping a few pounds fast, they are not healthy ways to lose weight and restrict the diet so your body is not getting proper nutrition.
Unhealthy Methods
Although it is a stereotype that the fashion industry works hard to change, there are still models who use unsafe and unhealthy methods to lose weight. These include eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia. Some models have an emaciated appearance due to unhealthy weight loss techniques. These should never be copied by anyone, as they can cause severe illness and even death.
Bottom Line
While models may look like they can effortlessly lose weight whenever they want, weight loss is an ongoing battle. You should never compare yourself to models when choosing a weight loss method. The National Heart Lung and Blood Institute urges those who need to lose weight to choose a sensible lifestyle program, rather than fast fixes and extreme measures.
