Culturelle is a type of dietary supplement that contains bacteria to promote a healthy immune system. Culturelle is available over the counter for prevention and treatment of stomach illnesses. It contains the bacteria Lactobacillus GG, which was discovered in 1985 to be a strain of "good" bacteria used for balancing the digestive system.
Probiotics
Culturelle is a type of probiotic, which is a strain of live bacteria comparable to those found in the intestines. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, NCCAM, all people have microorganisms in their bodies, and bacteria in the intestines help to digest food and protect against some illnesses. Taking a supplement that is a probiotic adds to these microorganisms.
Diseases
When your child develops a gastrointestinal illness, NCCAM states that taking a probiotic like Culturelle may help relieve some symptoms. Diarrhea occurs when a child has several loose, watery stools and can be dangerous to children who lose large amounts of water, causing dehydration. Probiotics such as Culturelle may help to control the growth of bacteria in the intestine that cause diarrhea and may relieve symptoms. Other types of illnesses for which you may consider probiotics include Helicobacter pylori infection, which can cause stomach ulcers; inflammatory bowel conditions; or rotavirus.
Directions
Your child can take Culturelle with or without food. Each dose of Culturelle for children is available in individual packets. For children younger than 13, empty one packet into a drink or cool food and stir until dissolved. Culturelle recommends giving a child one supplement each day to protect against stomach upset and gastrointestinal illness.
Side Effects
Side effects of Culturelle for children include abdominal bloating and gas. If your child develops symptoms of an allergic reaction to Culturelle, including swelling of the lips, face or tongue, skin rash or hives, or difficulty breathing, discontinue the dose and call your doctor immediately.
Considerations
Before giving your child Culturelle for gastrointestinal symptoms, consult with your doctor. Culturelle may be used for the relief of symptoms, but should not be considered a cure for your child's stomach illness. It should not be used to replace prescription medications from your doctor for your child's treatment. If you seek treatment for illness by a health-care provider, be sure to notify him of all alternative treatments and supplements that you give your child, including Culturelle.
