Many brands of water are sold around the world as well as many types. Some types of water are healthy and others are loaded with chemical flavoring, sugar and additives. In certain restaurants, customers are given a choice between tap water, spring water or carbonated water. Some people choose a certain type of water because of the taste and others choose it because of the health benefits.
Vitamin Water
Vitamin water is water that has been fortified with vitamins. Some brands of vitamin water contain additives, flavorings and sweetener, in addition to the vitamins. According to Mayo Clinic nutritionist Katherine Zeratsky, vitamin water is likely to have no benefit for people who eat healthy and may have a reverse effect in people who are dieting, due to the high caloric level. Although vitamin water is marketed as a healthy alternative to soda and some other drinks---largely because of the lack of vitamins in other drinks---vitamin water contains over 30g of crystalline fructose, which is currently under debate due to the health implications of ingesting this amount of fructose on a regular basis. To increase the effectiveness of this water, it is recommended that you drink it in conjunction with a healthy diet.
Carbonated Water
Carbonated water is water that contains carbon dioxide, which makes it look a lot like clear soda; this water is better known as seltzer water. Some carbonated water brands are flavored and others are just simply carbonated water. Carbonated water is sold in glass and plastic bottles and can even be made at home with a soda siphon device. This water usually has little to no calories, unless flavored, and it usually has no sugar.
Spring Water
Spring water comes from water that originates underground and flows naturally to the surface of the earth, according to My Spring Water. This water is collected from a spring or by extracting it from underground and feeding a spring. This water is available in personal-sized drinking bottles, but it is normally sold in gallon-sized jugs or larger.
Municipal/Tap Water
Tap water comes through the faucets in your home from a pipe that is fed into your home plumbing system. This water is generally safe to drink and, according to My Spring Water, it must meet the strict guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency, but it is not FDA approved. Even though this water is of good quality, some people do not like the taste and prefer bottled water.
