Regaine is the brand name used in the United Kingdom for minoxidil (known as Rogaine in the Untied States). It comes as a liquid topical or foam agent and is usually applied twice a day to treat hair loss in men and women. However, Regaine can cause side effects if used improperly or if you suffer an allergic reaction.
Scalp Itching and Dryness
Scalp itching and dryness is the most common side effect seen in Regaine users. Before applying Regaine, your scalp should be clean and free of sunburn. If you apply it incorrectly or on top of already irritated skin, it can cause the area to become irritated. This can then lead to some itching and dryness. According to Drugs.com, in more severe cases, dermatitis or eczema may occur and the skin may become scaly or peel off.
Weight Gain
Weight gain while taking Regaine is an uncommon side effect but it has been documented. According to the Drugs.com, unexplained weight gain has occurred in people who use the Regaine topical solution. If you suspect this may be happening to you, immediately stop using the treatment and see your physician.
Hypersensitivity
According to Drugs.com, some patients experience swelling of the face. A person with hypersensitivity may also experience hives, runny nose or swelling around the eyes, which can cause an inability to see properly. The Netdoctor website reports that hypersensitivity can also occur as a flushing or reddening on the skin. Regaine should never be used on any part of the body that it is not intended for because it can lead to severe reactions. If you experience hypersensitivity, see a physician for treatment.
Cardiovascular
Several cardiac symptoms have been reported as a side effect of Regaine. The risk for this symptom is increased if you already suffer from heart problems. More common side effects are rapid heartbeat, or pericarditis (heart infection). However, Drugs.com also reports that less common cardiac symptoms, such as chest pain, blood pressure changes and palpitations have also occurred. Cardiac problems should always be treated as an emergency and should immediately be seen by a physician.
