Lip wrinkles can come from smiling, sun exposure, smoking and genetics. You can prevent more lip wrinkles by limiting your exposure to the sun, wearing sunscreen regularly and quitting smoking. Although lip wrinkles are not always completely reversible, there are several treatments that can help, ranging from at-home remedies to injection treatments at a cosmetic surgeon's office.
Step 1
Moisturize your skin regularly. According to the Mayo Clinic, moisturizing can "improve skin tone and texture, and mask imperfections." Use an oil-free moisturizer formulated for sensitive skin and apply it to your face once in the morning and once at night, after cleansing.
Step 2
Exfoliate the skin on your face, especially in the lip area. Exfoliants slough away the dead skin cells on your face, leaving newer, radiant skin. Rub an oil-free exfoliant, available at a drugstore, on your face at least once a week to prevent the build-up of dead skin and minimize the appearance of wrinkles.
Step 3
Try over-the-counter and prescription wrinkle creams. Although not all wrinkle creams are proven to work, the Mayo Clinic suggests looking for wrinkle creams with active ingredients that prevent the appearance of wrinkles, including hydroxy acids, tea extracts, retinol and kinetin.
Step 4
Splurge on dermabrasion or chemical peel treatments. Both treatments are available at your dermatologist or cosmetic surgeon's office, and are costly procedures proven effective against wrinkle removal around the lips. Dermabrasion involves small, abrasive particles being blown at the skin to rub off skin cells, allowing for new skin growth with fewer wrinkles. Chemical peel treatments involve an acidic substance being applied to the skin, which can burn the sensitive areas of the face, including the lips, if it is not done properly.
Step 5
Get facial fillers injected around your lips. Facial fillers, which are the injection of substances like collagen, hyaluronic acid and hydroxyapetite into the skin around the lips, is performed at a cosmetic surgeon or dermatologist's office. Although the treatment only works temporarily, it fills in the area where wrinkles appear, making them almost invisible.
