Baseball is a game millions of youths worldwide enjoy. Several pieces of equipment are essential to the game, none more so than the baseball itself. Although similar, the specifications used in youth baseball differ from that of other levels of the game. In fact, the ball may vary slightly from one youth league to another.

Weight

The weight of the baseball should be no less than 5 oz. and no more than 5.25 oz. This is the same weight all prominent baseball organizations, including Major League Baseball, use for their baseballs.

Circumference

The circumference of the baseball should be no less than 9 inches and no more than 9.25 inches. Most baseball organizations, regardless of the age of the players, use a ball with this circumference.

Materials

Most baseballs at the youth level are constructed of solid cork or rubber. This varies from other baseballs that are constructed of yarn tightly wound around a core of cork, rubber or other solid material. Youth baseballs must be covered in a synthetic or leather material that is stitched together to create seams.

Color

Most leagues require that the baseball be white, although the ball often will appear discolored because of repeated contact with bats, gloves, grass, dirt and other objects. Some leagues, such as Dixie Youth Baseball, allow teams to use a yellow ball because it helps athletes recognize the baseball apart from its surroundings.

Markings

Often, baseballs used in game play must carry a youth league approval marking. Most organizations will mark baseballs with their logo and the word "Approved," but some may use only the league emblem. In addition, some organizations, such as Little League baseball, will mark balls in two ways: RS for regular season play only and RS-T for regular season and tournament play.
